The Art of unionität

Eberhard F. Gutberlet

Wir reisen gemeinsam

For those who know that we travel together.

„Don’t forget, friends, we are traveling together."

A plaque made of aluminum casting hangs on the brick wall of the Union-Geländes, created Eberhard F. Gutberlet in 2024. It bears the words of Rose Ausländer — a poet whose life was marked by the depths of the 20th century.

Their call is a timeless reminder that despite all the divisions on this one, undivided Earth, we are responsible for one another.

Among them is Friedhelm Welgethe sculpture „In andere Welten aufbrechen“ — the figure of Aegidius, the only of the fourteen helpers of the dead who peacefully passed away. The survivor. A shocking yet hopeful parallel to Rose Ausländer, who herself returned from the darkness.

„To grasp the gift of survival as a mission — for a shared journey on this undivided Earth.“

A Closer Look at the Work

Just a short distance away on the grounds is the plaque dedicated to Paul Celan — whom Rose Ausländer once met in the Ghetto of Czernowitz. Both texts correspond here to a sculpture by Welge. An invisible web of history and attitude that stretches across the entire grounds.

While Welge's figure in its capsule-like form symbolizes protection and quiet rest, Ausländer's poem breaks through this shell: The journey does not end in isolation — but in community with all those who are still on the way.
