Goodbye, Mom! Goodbye, Dad! See you soon, my child!
„I was convinced that the task I had undertaken was a necessity of life, and that it depended on me to fulfill that task.“
Recha Freier
The German-Jewish teacher Recha Freier has lived in Berlin since 1925. She and her husband Moritz Freier have four children. She is a convinced Zionist.
Early on, Recha Freier the danger posed by the rising National Socialist movement became apparent to Jews. Therefore, since 1932, she has organized the emigration of Jewish children and young people to the British Mandate of Palestine. In 1933, she founded an aid organization, from which the so-called Kinder- und Jugend-Alijah was born. Due to the growing antisemitic threat, more and more parents across Europe entrusted their children to the Kinder- und Jugend-Alijah.
In July 1940, Recha Freier even with her daughter, she fled the Nazi persecution and fled to Yugoslavia via Vienna. From Zagreb, she managed to secretly bring more than 130 Jewish teenagers and children out of the German Reich and the annexed Austria with the help of smuggling networks. In the spring of 1941, Freier, her daughter, and 90 children and teenagers reached Palestine. In total, the organization was able to save thousands of Jewish children from deportation and murder.
In Palestine, Recha Freier the end of the Second World War is being experienced.

Recha Freier On the stairs. Poetry collection, 1976
„I wasn’t at the train station when they were driving you out,”,
I wasn't on the ship when you arrived,
but in the end I am all yours, as you may know.
I was still at the train station when they were driving her out.
and on the ship, when you arrive,
and I am still with you
and all those who are to follow you
with all my heart,
and I hope with all my strength.
I hope to see you again this year.
Shalom to you and with heartfelt greetings, be strong,
Recha Freier.“
From a Recha Freier letter to a youth group that had already arrived in Palestine: Maayan Landau, Jerusalem 2013.
